India Grows the Ingredients. America Builds the Brands.

A frustrating pattern
Ashwagandha. Tulsi. Brahmi. Amla. Ingredients grown in Indian soil, used in Indian homes for centuries, documented in our texts for thousands of years.
Now look at who is building the fastest-growing wellness brands around them. Adaptogenic and functional beverage brands in the US have turned these exact ingredients into premium, beautifully branded, cult products — sold at a premium in mainstream retail. They took the raw material of our tradition, wrapped it in world-class design and storytelling, and sold it back to the world.
And what is India largely doing with the same ingredients? Selling them as raw powder in zip-lock pouches with clip-art labels, or as capsules in packaging that looks like it came out of a pharmaceutical factory.
This is not a supply problem
Let's be clear about what this gap is and isn't. India grows these ingredients. India has the traditional knowledge. India has the manufacturing capability and, increasingly, the scientific validation. Demand is here too — young Indian consumers are already buying imported wellness products at premium prices because nothing homegrown speaks to them.
So the missing piece is not the ingredient, the science, or the consumer. The missing piece is the brand. The packaging that makes someone pick it up. The identity that makes someone post it. The positioning that makes a 25-year-old in a metro feel this was made for them, not for their grandfather's medicine cabinet.
The size of the white space
Consider one adjacent example: nootropics — products for focus and mental clarity. In the US this is already a real, design-led category with ready-to-drink brands sitting on mainstream shelves. In India, search any e-commerce app for a nootropics drink and you'll find capsules, powders, and generic supplement packaging. A beautifully branded, shelf-ready Indian nootropic beverage barely exists.
The same is true across functional wellness. The category is growing quickly, the consumer is ready, the ingredients are literally native to us — and almost nobody has built a brand that treats the space with the design ambition it deserves.
Why this keeps happening
The reason is cultural, and it's fixable. Too many Indian founders in this space still think of themselves as ingredient companies or manufacturing companies. They lead with the formulation and treat the brand as a label you slap on at the end. American brands did the opposite — they understood that in consumer wellness, the brand is the product. The liquid or the powder is what's inside. The brand is what gets it into someone's hand the first time, and what brings them back the second.
The opportunity
This is one of the clearest white spaces in Indian consumer right now. Not because the products don't exist — they do. But because almost none of them are wrapped in a brand a young Indian consumer would be proud to own and share.
The founder who flips the equation — who builds a premium, design-led, culturally confident wellness brand around ingredients that are already ours — isn't just building a business. They're taking back a narrative that we exported by default. The ingredients were always here. It's time the brands were too.
